What is 3R?
The principle of reducing waste, reusing and recycling resources and
products is often called the "3Rs".
- Reducing means choosing to use things with care to reduce the amount of
waste generated.
- Reusing involves the repeated use of items or parts of items which still
have usable aspects.
- Recycling means the use of waste itself as a resources.
Waste minimization can be achieved in an efficient way.
What should and can we do to reduce marine litter
in the NOWPAP region?
In the NOWPAP region, a lot of plastic items such as cigarette filters,
plastic bags and beverage bottles were observed as marine litter in all
countries. In Japan and Korea, foamed polystyrene buoys were also observed.
On the other hand, in China and Russia, glass and ceramic materials is
major items.
To reduce such litter, think about how to change your daily habit and
consumption habit to avoid generating waste and using disposable materials
and to practice the 3 Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle).
Plastic and formed polystyrene:
Don't use disposable materials produced by plastic and foarmed polystyrene.
Use reusable materials.
Encourage three types of recycle; Mechanical Recycle, Feedstock Recycle
and Energy Recovery.
Glass:
Use returnable beverage glass. Recycle glass cullet.
Metal:
Collect metal items, implement separated collection and recycle them.
Have you ever done any of these things?
- Dropping cigarette butts on the beach or a street gully.
- Playing with fireworks on the beach and and leave the remains there.
- Throwing away tangled fishing lines into the sea.
- Losing bags of bait and a fishing gear when you are fishing.
- Leaving out garbage on the beach or in the park.
- Stuffing your garbage into overflowing garbage cans.
Most of marine litter is generated from our daily activities!!!
