Survey method
1 Preliminary survey
@Prior to the main survey, conduct a preliminary study to understand how
the beach and surrounding environment. Document the dates of past beach-cleaning
activities.
2 Main survey
- Select a survey site that is a representative of the general beach. Set
up 10 x 10 m survey grids between the shoreline and beach edge.
- As a general rule, set up 3 survey grids per row. If the beach width is
too narrow the number of surveys grids could be reduced to two per row.
- When setting up the survey grids, first mark the 4 corners of the grid
with stakes. Use a rope to connect the stakes in order to define the boundaries
of the grids.
- Collect the marine litters found within the survey grid boundaries. Classify
the collected marine litters into the following 8 litter categories (Plastic,
Styrofoam, Cloth, Metal, Rubber, Paper, Glass/Ceramic and Other artificial
objects). For each category, count the number and measure the weight of
the collected litters. Where possible identify the litter's place origin
(e.g. domestic or foreign) by checking any labels on the litter.
1. Set up survey grids
2. Collect the marine litter
3. Classify the collected litters
4. Measure/count the weight and number of litters and record the results
into the datasheet
